It’s not that I don’t feel passionately about politics because I truly do. I am a real believer in the phrase “If you’re not angry then you’re not paying attention.” I want to see change. I’m not above the middle class struggles of 2012: my mom had trouble finding work as a teacher because of all of the “cut-backs” that took place in PA, my sister is a college graduate and cannot find a job event though shes enormously overqualified for every job shes applied for, and I want to go to medical school and will mostly likely put me 100,000 dollars in debt. I’m not complaining because I realize how petty it would be of me to complain about my socioeconomic situation when there is so much suffering in the rest of the world. All I’m saying is that I am paying attention.
The reason I want to be less involved in politics is because - people don’t listen to reason. We would rather think we are right then accept the truth. I have a perfect example - the fundamental Christians (which the media portrays to be all Christians) who refute evolution. Science has provided a mechanism for creation and fundamentalist believe that this some how takes away from the divine providence of an Omnipotent being. What I am trying to say is that no matter what argument I bring up even one of flawless reason which shows the fallacies in an argument nothing and I mean absolutely nothing will change in the mind of the person I am talking to.
For example, last year I was saying how Obama has passed some good legislation and a friend (you probably know him hes the one that has little knowledge of politics so he’ll just talk about all the negatives he hears from his dad in an attempt to outweigh any positive) said to me “What has Obama done? Seriously bro name something hes done that’s made America Better. He doesn’t do anything, hes the worst blah blah Fox News blah blah.” I went back to my room and posted this on his facebook - thishttp://whatthefuckhasobamadonesofar.com/ which is a site which just names a bunch of legislation Obama’s past. All said friend did was erase the post of his wall and say “that’s bullshit.”
That leaves me at a crossroads because it makes my blood boil when closed minded Republicans who are Christians want to hold Jesus’s hand and drag him into their political ideologies and on the other hand no matter what I say in response no change will occur. My solution - change myself. In a book I recently read Blue Like Jazz the author Donald Miller said how the problems of the universe really lie within each of us. I might be able to change a persons political ideas but more importantly maybe I can show that being a republican doesn’t mean you can’t believe in Jesus. Maybe if I accept that fact that loving and accepting all people no matter who they want to kiss before they go to bed I can change one persons mind and when that person has a family his kids may be different and so on.
There are 2 more things I’d like to say in closing the first being I realize how cliched that end of my last paragraph sounded so save me the hateful messages. The second is on tumblr I am amongst friends. Republicans ideologies on tumblr are as rare as enjoyable Brandon Frasier movies. I am Democratic but I don’t believe that all Republicans who are Christians do a poor job of representing Christians or that my reasoning and politic ideas are correct. I’m trying to get across a much more subtle point: I will never change a person through logic, reasoning, or any words at all. The only hope I have to change a person is being part of the solution through action.
